Silver Hake Sampling Project

Silver hake sampling is seen as an important initiative as the Canadian silver hake fishery is relatively new; historically a foreign fishery. With more of our fishermen and plant workers depending on the sustainability of the silver hake fishery, we need to know as much as possible about the biology of this species. Therefore, the Society feels it important to sample this species. Sampling requires measuring and sexing 300 fish and removing otoliths and stomachs based on a stratification of 1 per cm per sex.

Our sampling by community technicians could further determine silver hake's current weights-at-age. These results would be something that we could compare to historical data. In addition, we would gain knowledge of the age structure of the fish captured in Emerald and LaHave Basins.
