2011 Collaborative Lobster Science Workshop
The Collaborative Lobster Science Workshop was a collaborative effort of the Fishermen and Scientists Research Society (FSRS), Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation (GOMLF) and University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ). The theme of this year’s workshop was "Back to the Basics", looking at what we know and what we don't know about lobster biology. The workshop helped identify gaps in our knowledge and priorities for research to address those knowledge gaps. We also looked at how lobster data is being used, and how it contributes to and its importance in conservation and management.
Presentations included:
- What Do And Don't We Know About Lobster Biology?
- Lobster Life Cycle
- Larval Ecology
- Larval Drift
- Settlement and Early Juvenile Stages
- Sexual Maturity – Angelica Silva
- Population Mixing/Conductivity
- Overview of NSERC Atlantic Lobster Research Partnership
- Opportunities for Cooperative Research and Fishery Management - A Fossil's View
- Data Usage
- How is data used now and how could it be used if the knowledge gaps were filled? (eg: how it is used for stock assessment, and also how it is used for other things such as habitat issues, aquaculture concerns, etc..)
- How is data used for conservation and management?
