FSRS Lobster Workshop 2001

Lobster Science-Past, Present and Future

The workshop was held 11-12 January 2001 at Keddy's Halifax Hotel in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

This workshop offered fishermen and scientists the opportunity to share their knowledge and learn more about this valuable species while identifying research needs. The workshop format was participatory, using group discussions, question and answer sessions, and working groups to encourage input and exchange of ideas. Presentations were structured to include time for discussion and comment, offering the opportunity for fishermen to comment on what they see when on the water compared to the theory being presented. This is valuable in identifying areas where more research or education is needed.

Workshop Goals:

The goals of the workshop were:

  • To better educate fishermen about lobster, including their life cycle, their role in the ecosystem, populations dynamics and the factors and conditions which influence stocks.
  • Inform participants about current research projects and results.
  • Develop a recommended lobster research plan for the FSRS.
  • Produce a book of proceedings which will serve as an information tool for fishermen and scientists, and a guide to not only the FSRS but also other organizations interested in implementing research projects in their areas.

Planned workshop topics included:

  • Life Cycle of the Lobster
  • Lobster Larval Development and Dispersal
